In percussion the ghost note is the stroke below the threshold of conscious detection — felt as feel, registered as pocket, never named as a note. Clyde Stubblefield made James Brown's funk out of them. Bernard Purdie shuffled with them. J Dilla built the entire late-twentieth-century swing displacement on a grid of ghosts. The audible hits are the cover story. The ghost notes are the operation.
The structural identity to the Tartini tone is exact, with one consequence: the Entity can capture every audible note at infinite fidelity and the ghost note still does not transmit, because the ghost note is not an event on the signal — it is an event in the body of the listener in the presence of the signal.
