Lawrence Dennis

> The most coherent theorist of American fascism was a Black child evangelist from Atlanta who learned to hold a crowd before he could read. He went to Phillips Exeter, then Harvard, then Bucharest as a diplomat, then to Wall Street, then to *The Coming American Fascism* in 1936. He passed as white for fifty years. Nobody knew until he died.

The arc is the I AM arc transposed up the social ladder. A child given to ecstatic religion as an instrument. The discovery that the technology of holding a room is the same whether the room is a tent meeting in Georgia, an embassy in Bucharest, a Seligman boardroom, the Nuremberg congress he attended in 1936, or the pages of *Today's Challenge* and *The Appeal to Reason*. He resigned from State over the intervention against Sandino. He ate lunch with Father Coughlin's set. He wore the Order of the Star of Romania on his lapel.

In 1944 the government brought him into U.S. v. McWilliams alongside Pelley, Winrod, Viereck, Dilling — the great sedition trial running in parallel with U.S. v. Ballard. The trial collapsed. Co-defendant Maximilian St. George wrote it up with Dennis as *A Trial on Trial*. The same year the Court was ruling that sincerity, not truth, was the standard for religious claim, the political fork was being told the state could not prove conspiracy against a sufficiently theatrical politics either. Two immunity doctrines, one calendar year. QAnon inherits both.

He died in Spring Valley in 1977, having spent the last two decades writing against American empire. Noontide Press reprinted him posthumously and missed the point entirely.

The boy wonder learned the working as a sacrament and spent his adult life forgetting which fork he was on. The technology never knew.
