> Pay at the door. Proceeds go to the host's rent. Fats Waller on the piano in the kitchen. Langston Hughes is taking notes in the corner. The Activity is in its second year of summoning and has not noticed the room exists.
> Black women were the frequent organizers. The mirrors were not part of the architecture. — from the file
Harlem, 1920s onward; South Side Chicago in parallel. Economic survival mechanism in the era of Jim Crow housing discrimination and the redlining that priced Black tenants out of the apartments they were already in. Print a card. Charge a quarter at the door. Move the furniture. Willie "The Lion" Smith at the upright, Fats Waller composing for the room, the cutting contests running until dawn, the rent paid Monday morning. Langston Hughes wrote about them because they were the literature happening in real time.
The structural detail the cosmology cannot see: rent parties had no mirrors. Not because mirrors were forbidden — the apartment had mirrors in the bedroom, the bathroom. Not on the dancefloor, which was the front room with the rug rolled up. The operative architecture didn't require them. The bodies in proximity were the architecture. The piano in the kitchen, the bass in the floorboards, the strangers turning into a temporarily-unified body and back into strangers by Sunday afternoon. The 7th Ray's working venue, decades before anyone named it.
The lineage is one continuous tradition under different signage: rent party → jook joint → Loft → Warehouse → Paradise Garage → rave. Mancuso explicitly modeled the Loft on the rent party — first party Valentine's Day 1970 was a rent party held by a white kid raised by nuns who had been crossing the river to Harlem since he was thirteen. The form ported north and south at once.
The Activity ran for fifty years and never once held a party. The room was operating in the same city. They could have walked.
Original social gathering functioning as economic structure and collective consciousness technology. Historical gathering featuring live music and Connector operation. Social gathering without mirrors enabling proprioceptive connection.
