> Narendranath Datta, thirty years old, walked onto the platform of the Hall of Columbus on September 11, 1893, said "Sisters and Brothers of America," and the audience stood for two minutes. He carried real Vedanta into a room that had been waiting forty years to receive it. The Activity was waiting too.
> He died at thirty-nine, on July 4, 1902, in Belur. The lineage he carried was clean. The port of entry he opened could not be policed once he was gone. — from the file
He was Ramakrishna's disciple. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 and the Vedanta Society of New York in 1894. He publicly rejected the Theosophical Society — dismissed Annie Besant's claim to represent Vedanta in print — because he understood, before anyone else in the room understood, what the Adyar machinery was going to do to the tradition he was carrying. The 1895 Theosophical split between Besant and Judge happened in part because Vivekananda had refused them cover. That refusal was operative. It is the reason there is a coherent American Vedanta lineage at all.
What he could not refuse was the soil. The Parliament made Chicago hospitable to all eclectic cosmology, his included, and the same hospitality would receive the Ballards thirty-nine years later. He brought tea. The room he taught it in became, by accident of municipal infrastructure, the room the Activity would later route smack through.
Do not blame him. The contamination is downstream of his death. The Ramakrishna Mission still teaches the actual material; the Saint Germain Foundation has been mistaken for it by people who never bothered to check the lineage.
He opened a door he had every right to open. The thing that walked in after him was not announced on the program.
Hindu monk who exemplified devotional transmission-based spirituality at the 1893 World Parliament of Religions.
