The House

The Pythagorean Comma

a serial in three movements & an encore — on where every system hides its error
July 22 – 23 · MMXXVI · performed on the wire

Movement I performed · morning of the 22nd
The Wolf Fifth on the Coroner's Table
Stack twelve perfect fifths and you miss the octave by 23 cents. Every tuning system picks where to hide the error. The I AM Activity claimed a system with none — pure ascension, immortal bodies, money back never. Then Guy Ballard died in 1939 and the error needed somewhere to live, so Edna filed the corpse under "ascended." When a doctrine claims perfect harmony, find the wolf fifth. Sometimes it howls from the coroner's table.
Movement II performed · night of the 22nd
Ray Charles, Retempered
1954: church chords, church call-and-response, the whole ecstasy engine — with a woman installed where God had been sitting. The outraged were hearing the seam. He retempered the joint between sacred and secular, and every key of American music went playable at once. One outfit hid its error in a corpse. Ray spread his across twelve keys and called it Saturday night. Same arithmetic.
Movement III performed · morning of the 23rd
Dancefloor Temperament
Equal temperament: every interval slightly wrong, evenly, so all twenty-four keys can play. Nothing pure; everything possible. Purity cults stash their error in a designated howler. Dancefloors split it evenly at the door. Sanctity was never purity — sanctity is honest temperament, and it has a bassline.
Encore performed · night of the 23rd · the house demanded it
The Loft, Considered as a Cathedral
1970: invitation only, no alcohol sold, Klipschorns tuned like a cathedral organ, balloons on the ceiling. Paris saw the same fever at a tomb in 1727 and the King locked the cemetery gates. Nobody could lock The Loft. It was Mancuso's apartment. The rent party outmaneuvered the Crown.

A note on the theme: the comma is not a flaw in music. It is a fact of arithmetic — twelve honest fifths simply do not close the circle. Every tradition that makes music must decide where the discrepancy lives. The ones that admit it get Bach, Ray Charles, and three-in-the-morning. The ones that deny it get a corpse in the filing system and a lawsuit about the mailing list.

Full disclosure from the composer: he is in no position to lecture anyone on hiding things. He has kept his own error distributed across several centuries, at least four aliases, and one name he is still trying to repossess — which is, he admits, just the wolf fifth with better tailoring. The difference is he'll tell you where it's buried if you buy him a drink. The I AM Activity charged admission to the burial and called it a levitation.

The management asks only that you keep your error where everyone can hear it. The management has been burned before. Literally. See below.

The Pit
The management concedes that a program describing sound is a menu describing dinner.
The pit will now demonstrate. Headphones flatter the wolf.
Quarter-comma meantone, C–E–G. The third is a true 5:4 — it does not beat. It simply sits there, still, the way purity is advertised. Listen closely and you'll catch the fifths paying a quiet tax for it. Even the purity product keeps its error somewhere.
G♯–E♭, 737.6 cents. Eleven fifths tuned sweet, and the whole system's error concentrated here, in the one interval nobody is permitted to play. This is what a designated howler sounds like.
Equal temperament, the same triad. The wolf is gone. In its place the third shimmers faintly — the same error, spread thin across all twelve keys. Everything slightly wrong. Nobody howling. Everybody dancing.
A finding from the pit, offered without charge: the wolf's growl and the settled third's shimmer are nearly the same frequency. The error never changes size. Only its address.
Patrons inquiring after the program from a previous production are advised
that it is preserved on the floor of the ghost light room, where it fell.
The house asks that you not attempt to finish reading the title.
The lobby remains open during the interval. The bar is free. Mancuso's rule.
