Annie Besant

> Besant inherited the Society in 1907 and spent twenty-two years building the off-ramp the Ballards would refuse.

> Krishnamurti dissolved the Order of the Star at Ommen on 3 August 1929. The Activity, given the same off-ramp four years later at Mount Shasta, refused it. — from the file

She took the chair after Olcott died and ran the international Society out of Adyar through what should have been the disqualifying years. The Leadbeater scandal — she reversed her own condemnation of him after a year of letters and then handed him a seat in the inner circle. The succession theatre — she and Leadbeater spent two decades grooming a Tamil boy into the vehicle of the next World Teacher and staked the entire cosmology on him. She also published *Occult Chemistry* with Leadbeater between 1895 and 1933, clairvoyant atomic diagrams the apparatus would later defend as physics. Capable. Compromised. Working.

What matters for this file is what happened in Holland. On 3 August 1929, in front of three thousand people Besant had personally summoned, Krishnamurti stood up and dissolved the Order of the Star and walked off the cosmology. "Truth is a pathless land." The vehicle quit. The Theosophical Society survived because it was *allowed* to survive that — Besant lived another four years and did not try to repair the claim with a substitute messiah.

This is what makes her the negative space the Activity occupies. Same architecture. Same hidden Masters. Same imminent overshadowing. Four years later at Mount Shasta the Ballards inherit her cosmology and, when their own vehicle dies in 1939, do the opposite thing. They announce Guy has ascended and keep selling. Besant let her messiah walk. They wouldn't let theirs stop.

The off-ramp was on the record. They had read her. They chose otherwise.
