Theosophical Society

The Society did three operationally consequential things between 1875 and 1933, and the Activity used all three. It published the Mahatma letters and *The Secret Doctrine*, which gave the English-speaking world a coherent cosmology of hidden Masters and an Eastern grammar to discuss them in. It built a global lodge network — 40,000+ members at peak — that pre-trained an audience to receive ascended-teacher material as familiar rather than novel. And it spent the 1895 schism teaching the American market that the doctrine could be held without London's permission.

Then it cracked. Blavatsky died in 1891. Judge died in 1896. Olcott died in 1907. By the time Besant and Leadbeater were running the dominant faction, the Society had already published Leadbeater's *The Masters and the Path* (1925) — the book that gave the Masters faces, robes, addresses, biographies. *Concretized* what Blavatsky had kept allusive. That concretization is the doctrinal asset the Ballards walked off with in 1933, names and ray-attributions intact. The Society formally noted the appropriation. It had no instrument to stop it.

Here is the part the auto-summary won't tell you. The Society's failure to discipline its own Master framework — the failure visible in Besant's reversal on Leadbeater, in the lawsuit over the 1895 seal, in the Krishnamurti unwinding of 1929 — is precisely the failure the Activity needed. A disciplined Theosophy keeps the cosmology in the commons. A fractured Theosophy lets a Chicago paperhanger claim Saint Germain as a private trademark and incorporate Saint Germain Press in 1935 to enforce it.

The building was real. The lease was forged. The tenants are still inside.
