Marvel Whiteside Parsons. Co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1936. Head of the Agape Lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis by 1942. Operating out of 1003 South Orange Grove Avenue, Pasadena — the Parsonage — where the Lodge moved that June. Crowley called him "the most valued member of the whole Order, with no exception." The man who put solid rocket fuel under the American war effort was also the man performing the Gnostic Mass at the address science-fiction writers crashed at on the weekends.

January through March 1946, the Babalon Working with Hubbard as scribe. Marjorie Cameron arrives. The marriage to Helen has already collapsed. He is broke. He is selling off the house in pieces. By 1952 he is in the coach house, working with chemicals he can no longer afford to respect, and on June 17 he blows himself up in his home laboratory. He and Cameron had been planning to leave for San Miguel, Mexico, the day after.

The official cause was an accident. The pencil notes in this file leave room for the other readings. Either way the geometry is the same: the man who connected pulp, rocketry, and the OTO into a single household died in the basement of that household, and the household did not survive him.

The Activity ran sixty meetings a week in Los Angeles in 1936. Parsons ran his Lodge five miles away. Pasadena was the same city to both of them and neither one quite acknowledged the other. The geography was already saying what the cosmologies refused to.
