Falstaff

> Premiered at La Scala the same year Chicago hosted the World Parliament of Religions. The Activity will arrive forty years later carrying the diluted version of what this opera worked out in three acts.

> Tutto nel mondo è burla. — final scene, ten voices simultaneously

Verdi's twenty-sixth and final opera. February 9, 1893. Libretto by Arrigo Boito out of *The Merry Wives of Windsor* and the Henry IV plays — Shakespeare's fat knight transplanted from history into the only domestic comedy he ever wrote. Boito and Verdi had been corresponding for years about the fugue. The fugue was the answer to a question neither of them would say aloud.

The closing fugue is the load-bearing piece. Ten voices, then twelve, all singing simultaneously that everything is a joke — *l'uom è nato burlone* — the man is born a joker. Comedy as fugato is auto-transparency at structural scale: the performer making the mechanism visible while operating it, and the audience laughing because the move worked anyway. The seria cathedral, four centuries of it, audible inside the laughter and rendered harmless. No one on stage is hiding. No one in the seats can hide either.

The Met has analyzed it correctly without naming what they were analyzing. The Activity has not been able to occupy that room since 1893. They tried — every cult since has tried to acquire a comedy and produced instead the same humorless conviction-engine in fresh costume. *Falstaff* is the receipt. Whatever the cosmology around it claims, the form is the ward.

Verdi was seventy-nine. He had eight years left and used none of them to compose another opera. He didn't need to. He had filed the document.

Verdi's final opera whose fugal finale expresses universal comedy through the most rigorous musical structure. Verdi opera using fugue structure to demonstrate multiple independent voices. Verdi opera with joke functioning as structural organizing principle. Verdi opera where comic structure IS emotional truth, extending Figaro Principle. Italian opera by Verdi, final work, contains fugue finale. Verdi's final opera dissolving seria-buffa opposition through democratic counterpoint. Verdi's opera culminating in fugue expressing 'Tutto nel mondo è burla' (all is jest). Verdi's final opera; a comedy-fugue where everything-in-the-world-is-a-joke. Verdi's final opera; achieves comedy through formal rigor and structural self-recognition. Verdi's final opera: unmistakably funny masterpiece ending in fugue declaring everything a joke. Verdi's final opera resolving career through pure comedy and fugue stating 'everything is joke.'
