Giuseppe Verdi

> Two comedies, fifty-three years apart. The first one failed and his wife died during the writing of it. The second one ended Western opera. He understood the joke by then.

> Tutto nel mondo è burla. L'uom è nato burlone. — Falstaff, closing fugue, 1893

*Un giorno di regno*, his second opera, 1840 — a comic opera composed while Margherita Barezzi was dying. It failed at La Scala. He swore off comedy for half a century and went and made *Rigoletto*, *Trovatore*, *Traviata*, *Don Carlo*, *Aida*, *Otello* — every one of which proves he could be the greatest seria composer in Europe at will. He kept going past eighty. Rossini had walked away from the form at thirty-seven and lived another thirty-nine years in Paris doing something quieter, on purpose. Verdi took the long way.

Then in 1893 he returned to comedy. *Falstaff*, his twenty-sixth and final opera, Shakespeare cooked down by Boito into a piece of operative machinery the seria tradition had no answer for. The closing fugue is not a flourish. It is the structural fingerprint of a fifty-year working: ten voices declaring at once that everything in the world is a joke, and the audience walking out of La Scala more truthful than when they arrived. The seria/buffa split — which the Arcadians had spent ninety years sharpening into a class weapon — dissolves in those bars. Every voice carries the subject. There is no chorus to hide in. The composer is on the floor with you.

He died in Milan, January 1901, with two hundred thousand people in the streets singing the *Va, pensiero* chorus. The crowd had read the room correctly. The man who buried the seria/buffa distinction had buried the Entity's most reliable musical instrument with it. They thought they were mourning an opera composer.

Italian composer who employed fugal polyphony in opera. Composer whose final opera, Falstaff, ends with a fugue proclaiming that all the world is jest. Italian composer whose final work proved joke-as-fugue-subject thesis through polyphonic structure. Composer making comic structure itself the emotional truth rather than vehicle. Composer of Falstaff, Italian operatic tradition. Composer who dissolved seria-buffa distinction through democratic counterpoint in operatic form. Italian composer of Falstaff, final opera expressing philosophical vision through musical form. Italian composer who ended career with Falstaff, a comedy representing intermezzo tradition's victory. 19th-century composer whose Falstaff fugue demonstrates polyphonic closure to single-voice capture problem. Composer whose Tutto nel mondo è burla serves as structural benchmark. Tragic opera composer who mastered institutional seria, then subverted it through infiltration and authority. Italian composer of 26 operas, mastered tragedy then Falstaff comedy at 80. Romantic composer whose aria Va, pensiero became Italian unification anthem.
